When it comes to Places of Germany tips for city trips in Germany, Cologne is of course a must. For most tourists, Cologne Cathedral is certainly the first port of call when visiting the city. The famous landmark of Cologne is considered a “perfect cathedral” thanks to its special Gothic architecture and has survived …

… survived the destruction of the Second World War virtually unscathed. In 1995, the world-famous sacred building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Not far from Cologne Cathedral is another of Cologne’s sights – the Hohenzollern Bridge. The listed bridge with its characteristic trussed arches serves as a railway bridge. It is also a special place for lovers, who like to place their love locks here. Another landmark in Cologne’s city skyline is the innovative KölnTriangle office tower. Located opposite the cathedral, you can enjoy the view of the cathedral city and the Rhine from the viewing platform of the glass tower at a height of over 100 metres. The Cologne Chocolate Museum, which is now one of the city’s most popular cultural institutions, is a little less well known but just as worth a visit. Here you can learn all about the history of cocoa and the development of chocolate production. Tasting is absolutely encouraged at various tastings and workshops! If you are travelling with children, a visit to Cologne Zoo is also a good idea. The third oldest zoo in Germany is home to more than 10,000 animals from over 800 different species on an area of around 20 hectares. The regular feedings and flight shows are particularly exciting. If you want to experience something really special, you have to come to the Cologne Carnival during the “fifth season”. Here you can experience genuine Rhenish joie de vivre at more than 500 sessions, balls and parades. The absolute highlight is, of course, the big Rose Monday parade through the city centre. The carnival season is organised by around 160 carnival societies and local clubs, which prepare for the fun days all year round.
