Altenstein Castle in Bad Liebenstein, Thuringia, was built in 1736 as the country house of the dukes of Meiningen and expanded into a summer residence in 1800. As the centre of the extensive park, the castle, built in the style of the English late Renaissance, impresses with its elaborate design. The building became famous through several stays of the composer Johannes Brahms in 1894 and 1895. In the Brahms memorial, which is located in the castle today, one can view numerous letters and printed works that tell of the close relationship between him and Duke Georg II. In 2021, the park was part of the Federal Garden Show in Erfurt and summer concerts are regularly held here.
