Do you want to walk in the footsteps of the Nibelungs? You can do so in Alzey, one of the towns mentioned in the Niebelungenlied. The small town (pop. approx. 18,000) in Rheinhessen has a well-preserved old town with many half-timbered houses and is surrounded by ruins of the medieval city wall. The center of Alzey is the Rossmarkt, where cafes and restaurants invite you to linger. There, next to the fountain drinking trough decorated with vines and grapes, stands the bronze horse Max with his rider, the noble knight and minnesinger Volker von Alzey from the Nibelungen saga. The Niebelungen treasure lies at the bottom of the well, at least according to legend.
