One of Bautzen’s medieval towers, for many the most beautiful, is the Reichenturm. Part of Bautzen’s former city fortifications, it is located on the Kornmarkt and on the border with the Buttermarkt. The Reichenturm was built as a protective tower for the “alley of the rich” from 1490, destroyed several times by fire and war, and rebuilt in its present appearance in 1709 after the great city fire. It is also called the “leaning tower” because it leans 1.44 metres off plumb to one side. The tower is open from April to October and offers a very nice overview of the old town of Bautzen.
