The famous bronze sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians is usually the first thing you see when you visit Bremen’s market square. As the best-known landmark of the Hanseatic city, which can also be found in numerous souvenirs, the statue by Gerhard Marcks from 1953 is reminiscent of the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm. The impressive two-metre tall figure with donkey, dog, cat and rooster is located on the left western side of the town hall. The donkey’s bare front legs are particularly striking. The reason: it is supposed to bring good luck to touch them! However, it is important to touch both legs. Whoever does not do this, according to legend, “gives the donkey his hand”.
