Detmold’s old town is something very special for visitors, as more than 700 architectural monuments from the late Middle Ages, the Biedermeier period and the Wilhelminian period can be marvelled at here. Since the city centre remained almost unscathed in both world wars, most of the historic half-timbered buildings and small alleys are well preserved. Highlights are certainly the Princely Residence Palace with its 16th-century castle park and the State Theatre dating from 1825. The market square in Detmold’s old town with the Church of the Redeemer and the classicist town hall are also not to be missed. Three times a week you can experience a very special flair here at the popular weekly market.
