Hardly any other building characterises the cityscape of Dresden as much as the Protestant sacred building of the Frauenkirche. The Protestant-Lutheran church in the Baroque style was built on Dresden’s Neumarkt from 1726 to 1743 according to a design by George Bähr and is sure to be on every tour group’s itinerary. In February 1943, the Dresden Frauenkirche was completely destroyed by an air raid. During the time of the GDR, the church ruins were considered a memorial for the destruction during the Second World War. From 1994 to 2005, the Frauenkirche was rebuilt – financed by development associations and donors from all over the world – and is now regarded as a symbol of reconciliation.
