A detour to the town hall is a must on any trip to Frankfurt. The town hall of the city of Frankfurt am Main with its characteristic stepped gable façade has been located here since the 15th century. Today it is still the centre of city politics and the official seat of the city representatives and the Lord Mayor. The exact origin of the name “Römer” is not clearly known. Although the entire town hall complex is generally referred to as the Römer, this name actually only applies to the middle of the three buildings on Römerberg. During the destruction of the Second World War, only the stone facades and ground floors of the medieval houses were preserved.
