As part of the “Drei Gleichen” castle ensemble, Gleichen Castle is located in the Thuringia Inselsberg Geopark near Gotha and Erfurt. The three castles Mühlburg, Veste Wachsenburg and Burg Gleichen can all be explored via beautiful hiking trails. Gleichen Castle was built in the 11th century and was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Gleichen until 1537. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly besieged and destroyed due to its location on the medieval trade route “Via Regia”. Today, the defence tower houses an interesting exhibition on the castle’s history and the natural environment of the Three Equals region, and the viewing platform offers a great view of the neighbouring castles.
