The best way to explore Gotha’s picturesque old town is on foot. Impressive sights such as the historic town hall on Buttermarkt or the lavishly restored Hauptmarkt can be reached on foot, as can the Augustinian monastery. This over 700-year-old monastery is the first in Thuringia and houses the tombstone of Gotha’s reformer. Another special attraction is Gotha’s water art – a system completed in 1895 that was used to irrigate fountains and fountains and to supply water locally. Just above the town is Friedenstein Palace with the Palace Museum, the Museum of Nature, the Palace Church and the baroque Ekhof Theatre.
