Behind the arcades, which bring a Venetian flair to Hamburg, you will find many exclusive and traditional shops as well as restaurants and cafés. This is a wonderful place to stroll and wander. The famous arcades were first built after the Great Fire in Hamburg in 1842, which destroyed large parts of the city, many warehouses, merchants’ houses, residential buildings and also the town hall. In the beginning, the arches were painted ochre-yellow according to the Italian model, but only later did they receive the white plaster that is characteristic today.
