It was a meeting point and place of arbitration for kings and emperors. In 842, the negotiations for the division of the Frankish Empire took place here with far-reaching consequences. An Eastern Empire and a Western Empire were created. France and the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation then developed from this. The building in its present form was mainly constructed in the 12th century.
