The medieval town church of St. George is located in the centre of the Thuringian town of Schmalkalden. Since the interior was initially designed rather soberly in the style of purism, it was comprehensively restored in 1898/99. In the process, the most valuable part of the interior decoration today, the late Gothic parapet paintings on the west gallery, were uncovered and renewed. Also worth seeing is the so-called Luther Room above the sacristy with a small church museum. According to legend, Martin Luther warmed himself here during a visit to Schmalkalden in the morning during the church services. Since 1996, it has once again been possible to climb the church tower. Here you have a unique panoramic view of the surrounding area.
