If that isn’t an extraordinary theater stage: the well-known open-air plays have been held annually on the imposing flight of steps of St. Michael’s Church in Schwäbisch Hall since 1925. This makes this popular cultural event the second oldest in Germany and the only one that takes place on a total of 54 steps. A visit to the town church of St. Michael is also worthwhile. The church was originally consecrated as a basilica in 1156 and rebuilt in the 15th century after being partially demolished. Today, the church, which is well worth seeing, is officially part of the European Cultural Heritage. Highlights of the church are the large Passion altar, the 13th-century sculpture of the archangel Gabriel and the late Gothic reticulated vault.
