The Kleine Arbersee lake in the Bavarian municipality of Lohberg is considered a “wonder of nature”. The remnant from the Ice Age borders a nature reserve and is known for its “floating islands”. Due to the rising water level, shore felts detach themselves from the subsoil and form these impressive phenomena. The islands are partly held together by three-metre-thick roots and move freely in the lake. The location of the Kleiner Arbersee is also unique: in a horseshoe-shaped basin surrounded by steep karst walls over which thundering waterfalls cascade when the snow melts. The lake can be reached in summer with the “Kleinen Arberseebahn”, which runs between Lohberghütte and Kleiner Arbersee.
