In the middle of Kampen is the Sylt Uwe Dune, the highest natural elevation on Sylt, which offers a unique panoramic view of the island. From the viewing platform, which can be reached via a wooden staircase, you can even see as far as Denmark in good weather. The name of the 52.5-metre-high dune goes back to the famous Uwe Jens Lornsen. The lawyer and freedom fighter stood up for human rights and free thinking and was even bailiff on Sylt for a short time. Because of his “Union Constitution of Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein”, which he wrote in exile in Brazil, the well-travelled Lornsen is today considered a pioneer of the modern constitutional state.
