Sylt Westerland is the tourist centre of the North Frisian island and has been a recognised North Sea spa resort since 1949. With its long sandy beaches, famous promenade and wide range of leisure activities, the town attracts numerous visitors every year. Nestled between dunes, sea and urban life, Sylt Westerland combines a natural experience with maritime flair.
Its history dates back to the Middle Ages. After the All Saints’ Flood of 1436, the original village of Eidum was refounded in a safer location – today’s Westerland was born. Today, there are few reminders of the old days, but buildings such as the 17th century Protestant church of St Niels bear witness to its historical roots. The ‘Cemetery of the Homeless’ is also a special place: In the 19th century, nameless shipwrecked people who washed up on the coast were buried here.
In addition to cultural sights, Sylt Westerland offers a wide range of opportunities for relaxation: walks along Friedrichstraße, swimming fun in the ‘Sylter Welle’ or family trips to the Sylt Aquarium. The lively pedestrian zone, numerous cafés, restaurants and boutiques make the town a popular holiday destination – not just in summer, but all year round.
