The Wetzlar Cathedral Square in the centre of the old town is dominated by the town’s landmark – the Cathedral of Our Lady. Wetzlar Cathedral is the largest sacred building in the city and used to serve as a collegiate church. Since today’s parish church was never the seat of a bishop, it is not considered a cathedral. Another interesting building in the historic ensemble of houses on Wetzlar’s Domplatz is the Hauptwache, built in 1861 and first used as a guard station and then as the domicile of the protective police. The aging town house at the cathedral is to be demolished in 2022. Three cathedral courtyards will then be built on this site, in keeping with the historic character of Wetzlar’s Domplatz.
