Wetzlar’s fish market is directly adjacent to the Domplatz or the Stadthaus am Dom. The historically significant focal point of the picturesque square is certainly the town hall at Fischmarkt number 13, which was built in the middle of the 14th century. The building was rebuilt several times over the years and from 1690 served as the Imperial Chamber Court, the highest court of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. After it was dissolved in 1756, a chancery was based here until 1806. The most famous trainee in this house was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, as can be read in the trainee register of 25 May 1772.
