In the heart of Wetzlar’s old town is the Eisenmarkt with its many picturesque half-timbered houses. One of these historic buildings is the “Alte Münz” (Old Mint), dating from 1599. The building, which is well worth seeing, was probably built on the site where the medieval mint was previously located. Today you can enjoy the view of the special flair of Wetzlar’s iron market in the café located here. In the centre of the square, the octagonal fountain with a statue of St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, is an eye-catcher. This fountain is a popular meeting place for young and old as well as the starting point for the popular “Miners’ Route” hike.
