If you are looking for a quiet spot after a tour of the city, Wetzlar’s Schillerplatz is the place to be. There are numerous cafés and restaurants here that invite you to linger with their outdoor seating. In summer, the Schillerplatz in Wetzlar also regularly hosts a market in addition to the popular Summer Night Wine Festival – a sea of large market umbrellas dominates the picture here. Several historic buildings are also worth seeing on Wetzlar’s Schillerplatz. These include in particular the Lower Town Church, the Wetzlar Music School and the Jerusalem House literary memorial. Here, in 1772, Legation Secretary Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, who served as the model for Goethe’s novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” shot himself.
