A city break to Thuringia would not be complete without a visit to Erfurt, the charming capital of the federal state. The lovingly restored historic buildings characterize the city center and give it a very special charm…
… This magic can be felt especially at the fish market, where the impressive Erfurt City Hall is also located. Market Street leads directly from the fish market. It is lined with numerous shops offering antiques and handicrafts. It is the perfect place to stroll and wander.
From Market Street, it is a short walk to one of Erfurt’s most famous landmarks: the Krämer Bridge. This historic bridge over the Breitstrom river is a popular photo motif. It is a must-see on any guided tour of Erfurt. Small half-timbered houses line both sides of the bridge. Today, these half-timbered houses are home to artisans, galleries, and small shops.
Not far away, on Cathedral Square, stand the imposing St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Severus Church. These two impressive sacred buildings attract around two million visitors every year and are absolute highlights of the city. Cathedral Square is also the venue for the famous Erfurt Christmas market, which attracts numerous visitors every year during Advent. If you’re in the mood for Christmas spirit, you should definitely visit this Christmas market.
In addition to its historical sights, Erfurt also has some great places to offer for nature and recreation lovers. A very special destination on the edge of the old town is the egapark Erfurt. As one of the largest leisure and recreation parks in Europe, the egapark offers everything your heart desires. The park was the venue for the Federal Horticultural Show in 2021. It captivates visitors with its numerous themed and show gardens. There is also an adventure world and a beautiful sea of flowers. One of the park’s highlights is “Danakil,” the world’s first desert and jungle house with two climate zones – a must for nature lovers.
For those who want to make their city break a sporting one, Erfurt’s Nordstrand (a gravel lake) is the place to go. Here you can swim, water ski, play beach volleyball or beach soccer, or simply enjoy the sun and relax.
Erfurt offers a successful mix of culture, history, and recreation – perfect for an unforgettable city break.
