Anyone looking for beautiful cities in Germany for a short trip might not immediately think of Lüneburg. However, in addition to the Lüneburg Heath, the old town is also well worth a visit. Due to its many historic town and patrician houses and picturesque alleyways, Lüneburg’s Old Town is often referred to as an area monument. …
… One of the highlights of Lüneburg’s sights is certainly the Lüneburg Town Hall. The city’s 700-year-old landmark impressively combines different eras and architectural styles in one building – from the Middle Ages through Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque. It still serves as the city’s administrative centre today. The town hall tower with its tower clock and carillon made of Meissen porcelain is something special. You should also definitely visit the Lüneburg water tower during a visit to the former salt and Hanseatic city. The historical monument can be visited, e.g. on one of the informative guided tours. From the top, you have a fantastic view over the rooftops of the city. There is also a registry office here, which is very popular for weddings. But you can also find great excursion destinations outside Lüneburg. The “Heide Himmel” treetop walk, for example, is popular with young and old alike. The barrier-free nature and environmental centre gives you a fascinating insight into the flora and fauna of the region. From the distant viewing plateau at a height of 45 metres, you also have a unique view over the Lüneburg Heath as far as the port of Hamburg. Just outside the city centre of Lüneburg are the time-honoured walls of Lüne Abbey. Surrounded by greenery, the old Benedictine convent dating back to 1172 has opened its doors to visitors. In addition to the idyllic herb garden and the orchards with their old trees, the cloister, the fountain hall, the church, the nuns’ choir and the dormitory are particularly worth seeing. On a guided tour, you can learn more about the history of the monastery and marvel at the art treasures, the murals in the refectory and the textile museum. A visit to the café in the monastery is also worthwhile.
