The romantic ruins of Badenweiler Castle from the Middle Ages sit proudly above the excavations of a Roman spa, nestled in an English landscape garden. The exact year of its construction is not known, but the sheer size of the remains suggests that a mighty castle once stood here. In the Middle Ages, it dominated the area – both visually and strategically. While the expansive view was once used for defense, the castle and its incredible panorama attracted visitors as early as the 18th century. Over the years, the walnut tree avenue at the foot of the castle hill, a viewing terrace and a stair tower on the western fortress wall, which provides access to the shield wall with its magnificent panoramic view, were also built.
