The ruins of Höhenburg Rötteln are located on a mountain spur above a district of Lörrach and are considered an important landmark of the region. With its two defence towers, it was once one of the most powerful castles in the southwest of the country. After being partially destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, it finally lost its status after being damaged in the Dutch War of 1678. Today, Rötteln Castle is administered by the institution Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg and is open to visitors all year round. About 50,000 excursionists come to the castle every year to take part in a guided tour or to visit the castle on their own.
