Standing in front of it, you can literally feel the breath of the past. For 200 years, this was the center of court life in Bamberg.

History: The New Residence in Bamberg – Bishops and Kings

The New Residence in Bamberg was built in two phases: the rear section, in the Renaissance style, was constructed first, beginning in 1604, followed by the front section, in the Baroque style, between 1697 and 1703. The bishops were the first to move in.

With the secularization of the early 19th century, the bishops moved out—and from 1803 onward, Bavarian kings and even the King of Greece took up residence here. In 1919, the members of the state parliament adopted Bavaria’s first democratic constitution here. The New Residence in Bamberg looks back on an eventful history.
