The Gendarmenmarkt is considered the “most beautiful square in Berlin”. It is surrounded by beautiful historic buildings of the highest order. It is home to the Schauspielhaus, now used as a concert hall, as well as the German and French cathedrals. A stroll through the lively square gives visitors a sense of Berlin’s history. The Gendarmenmarkt was built in 1688 as part of the Friedrichstadt (Frederick City), which was built by Elector Frederick III, later King Frederick I of Prussia. The square and its buildings were destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt between 1976 and 1993.
