The Nikolai Quarter is the oldest quarter in Berlin. It was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. In 1980-1987 it was rebuilt on the occasion of Berlin’s 750th anniversary by order of the East Berlin magistrate. The Nikolai Church was reconstructed in this context. Around it, on an almost medieval ground plan, historical town houses were rebuilt; however, only partly in historical garb and partly as appropriately adapted prefabricated buildings. When strolling through the streets or having a coffee, you can still feel something of the atmosphere of that time.
