Dankwarderode Castle is a Saxon lowland castle in the heart of Braunschweig. The romantic archways and the backdrop of the winding half-timbered houses in particular make the eye wander over the entire castle square. While the castle long served as the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick, it now houses the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, where the many treasures that have accumulated over the centuries are on display. On the Burgplatz itself, the Braunschweig State Theatre offers a varied programme. The open-air stage resembles a wooden coliseum and unfolds a very special charm between the old walls.
