Former residence of "Saint Elisabeth

From afar, the 12th-century Creuzburg castle resembles a medieval theatre set. The impressive castle complex was the ancestral seat of the Landgraves of Thuringia in the 12th and 13th centuries. Elisabeth Landgravine of Thuringia was canonised in the courtyard of the Creuzburg in 1235. A monument to “Saint Elisabeth” was erected in the so-called Elisabeth Bower. The famous German composer Michael Praetorius, son of the town and creator of the song “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen”, also has a memorial here with an exhibition on the composer’s life and work. With an area of 7400 square metres, the 830-year-old Creuzburg is one of the larger Romanesque castle complexes in Germany.
