Anyone taking a trip to Essen should not miss it – Essen’s Grugapark, also known as the green heart of Essen. The park, which has been in existence for 90 years, is a very special spot of nature in the middle of one of the former centres of the coal and steel industry. On about 60 hectares, locals and visitors can go for a walk, look at the various park animals, do sports, marvel at one of the largest sculpture exhibitions in Germany or come to rest. Before Essen officially evolved from a coal and steel city into the European Green Capital in 2017, the Essen Grugapark had already been an integral part of the cityscape as an urban recreation area for many years.
