The Freiburger Bächle is truly an attraction for young and old! In numerous alleys of the old town you can find flat paved channels that constantly carry water. The curiosity dates back to the 12th century when the inhabitants had to be supplied with drinking and fire-fighting water to found the city. Even today, Freiburg’s Bächle is fed by the Dreisam River. But here not only hands and feet are dipped diligently. Every year, the water channel is the venue for the famous Bächleboot race. And the Bächle is also notorious among singles. It is said that whoever accidentally steps into the Bächle has to marry a Freiburg man or woman.
