One of the most frequent destinations in Thuringia is the 18th-century Heidecksburg Castle, also known as the city crown of Rudolstadt. The magnificent baroque castle with its numerous exhibitions and collections from art, cultural and natural history attracts over 100,000 visitors to the “Wunderkammer Heidecksburg” every year. After initially being owned by the Counts of Orlamünde in the Middle Ages, the castle was acquired by the Counts of Schwarzburg in 1340. From 1547 to 1918, Heidecksburg Castle was then the residence of the counts and princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The relics of one of the oldest Thuringian noble families as well as the impressive architecture can be explored on a tour.
