It towers majestically over Heidenheim an der Brenz and is considered the town’s landmark: Hellenstein Castle. Only the Knights’ Hall remains of the 12th century Hohenstaufen castle complex, which served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Hellenstein. After Hellenstein Castle passed into Bavarian ownership in the late Middle Ages, it became Württemberg property at the beginning of the modern era. At the end of the 16th century, the Renaissance-style castle was built on the same site. Interested visitors can visit the castle grounds all year round. From April to October, the two museums are also open. A highlight for all classical music fans are the annual opera festivals held at Hellenstein Castle.
