Near Weimar lies the former Kochberg Castle manor, which used to be the country residence of the noble von Stein family. The castle became famous through the visits of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited here several times between 1775 and 1788 due to his friendship with Charlotte von Stein. In addition to the lovers’ theatre built around 1800, the castle restaurant and the Goethe memorial, opened in 1949, are also worth a visit. In the castle’s own museum, two of Goethe’s original desks are among the most valuable exhibits. In 2012, the castle was opened to the public after a two-million-euro renovation.
