Directly on the Austrian border, not far from Füssen and Königswinkel, is the Forggensee Lake – Germany’s largest reservoir in terms of area. Due to the idyllic panorama of the foothills of the Alps and the close proximity to the tourist magnet Neuschwanstein Castle, the lake with its crystal-clear water regularly attracts numerous visitors. In summer, you can swim at the lake’s many bathing spots and take advantage of the other leisure facilities. But the Bavarian Forggensee is also worth a visit in winter: to protect against flooding, almost all the water is drained in the cold season, so you can go for a walk in the lake and look for artefacts from Roman times.
