Amazon of the North

Unspoilt nature as far as the eye can see – that’s what you get on Lübeck’s Wakenitz. No wonder, then, that the river, which meanders for almost 15 km from Lake Ratzeburg to the Hanseatic city, is also called the “Amazon of the North”. While the Wakenitz used to flow into the Trave, today it overflows into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal at Falkendamm. Due to several dams, the river is several hundred metres wide in some places in its northern course. The lake landscape with its many animal and plant species can be wonderfully explored on a canoe trip. A hike along the “Drägerweg” is also a wonderful experience.
