In former times it was the most important place for the transfer of goods, today it is popular as a venue for annual Lüneburg festivals: the Hauptplatz am Sande. As one of the oldest squares in the city and one of the most important medieval squares in Germany, the Platz am Sande was the centre of goods trade. Visitors strolling through the old town are particularly impressed by the magnificent town houses that can be seen here. These date from a wide variety of eras and all have different types of gables – predicate absolutely worth seeing. On the edge of Lüneburg’s main square on the Sande stand the St. Johannis Church and the magnificent building of today’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
