Andechs Monastery dates back to 1423, but still houses monks of the Benedictine order. The monastery is considered the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bavaria as well as the town’s landmark. One reason is certainly the location of the characteristic onion tower at over 700 metres – the highest point of the “Holy Mountain”. After being destroyed over the centuries, the monastery was extensively restored in 1669. It was not until 1755 that it was remodelled in the Baroque style. The interior of the pilgrimage church is particularly worth seeing – it is a rococo jewel with paintings by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The monastery is maintained by the income from the brewery.
