Romantic alleys, beautiful half-timbered houses and the idyllic River Rur, which flows through the middle of the Eifel town – that is the old town of Monschau. Another eye-catcher in the historic town centre is the “Red House”, a patrician house that stands for the heyday of the cloth-making industry that shaped Monschau in the 18th century. Another relic of the Middle Ages is Monschau Castle from the 12th century, which towers high above the town. The castle is one of the town’s most popular tourist destinations and is the venue for the Monschau Festival in summer. Part of the historic building also houses a youth hostel that is popular with youth groups and families.
