Popular tourist destination at Marienplatz

Built between 1867 and 1905, the New Town Hall on Marienplatz became the new seat of the city administration, as the neighbouring Old Town Hall no longer offered enough space. The town hall is famous for its magnificent neo-Gothic façade and the balcony from which FC Bayern traditionally celebrates the German championship with its fans. A special attraction for tourists is also the carillon in the town hall tower, which can be heard daily at 11 am, 12 pm and in summer also at 5 pm. Waltzes and various songs are played here in turn, as well as Richard Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” and Johannes Brahms’ “Wiegenlied” at 9 pm in the evening.
