Street artists, city tours and many buses, taxis, suburban trains and underground trains determine the picture at Munich’s Marienplatz, which is also considered the heart of the Bavarian capital. Architecturally, the New Town Hall with its neo-Gothic façade and the Glockenspiel, the Old Town Hall and magnificent commercial buildings catch the eye here. In the middle of the square is the historic Mariensäule (Mary’s Column), which is a popular meeting place, as is the fish fountain in front of the main entrance to the New Town Hall. Political, cultural or sporting events and official celebrations such as the championship reception of FC Bayern Munich also regularly take place here. Marienplatz is also a good starting point for a shopping trip.
