At 850,000 square metres, the Munich Olympic Park is one of Munich’s largest parks. You can roughly divide the Munich Olympic site into three areas: The park area, the lakes and the Olympic buildings. If you are looking for peace and relaxation in the countryside, the green park area with the Olympic Hill is the best choice. Here you can stroll along small paths through the Munich Olympic site. If you want to be more sporty, you can also go jogging or inline skating here. The grounds of the Olympic Park are quite hilly, so you’ll get your money’s worth.
Tip: You absolutely must take a trip up the 564 metre-high Olympiaberg. Interesting fact: it was built from the rubble of the Second World War. From here you have a fantastic view, not only over the Munich Olympic site, but also over large parts of the city. In good weather, you can see as far as the Alps. Munich’s highest beer garden is also located here, from where you can relax and enjoy the marvellous scenery. In winter, you can go sledging from the Olympiaberg. But be careful: some of the slopes are very steep. The large and small Olympic lakes are located in the centre of Munich’s Olympic Park. You can hire a boat on the large Olympic lake and relax on the water. On the other side of the lake, another part of the Munich Olympic site is built up with sports facilities. These include the Munich Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Tower, the Olympic Hall and other sports facilities.
History: 1972 Olympic Games
The Olympic Park is now more than 50 years old. It was built from 1967 to 1972 for the 1972 Olympic Games. The FC Bayern Munich matches were held here until 2005. The park and the sports facilities with the curved tent roof are architecturally outstanding. They blend harmoniously into the landscape. More than 230 million registered visitors have visited the Olympic Park since it was built. More than 30 world championships, over 20 European championships and over 100 German championships have been held here. In recent years alone, almost 5 million visitors per year have been counted. The 190 metre high Olympic Tower offers you an impressive view over the Olympic Park and across Munich to the Alps. You can fortify yourself in the BlueSkyCoffee coffee bar. If you are looking for something special for the evening, you can enjoy a sunset dinner at Restaurant 181. The Olympic Stadium impresses with its special tent roof. You absolutely have to see it at sunset. Then it shimmers in orange-red. If you are brave enough, you can take a tent roof tour. You can also take a flying fox flight over the stadium or abseil 40 metres down. The Olympic Park is also home to SEA LIFE. In the large aquarium, you can marvel at more than 1,600 marine animals in 39 tanks. Of course, the sharks are particularly spectacular. You should allow two hours for a tour of SEA LIFE. Not far from the Olympic Park you will find BMW Welt München. Here you can admire numerous models from the famous manufacturer.
Special tip: sunsets, concerts, sport, open-air cinema & fireworks in the Olympic Park
You can see and visit numerous interesting events on the Olympic site in Munich. Firstly, we recommend a visit to the Olympia hill at sunset. Here you can relax and watch the sun colour the roof of the Munich Olympic Stadium red. From here, you can also listen to the big concerts in the Olympic Stadium for free. Tens of thousands did just that for Taylor Swift. More than 100 stars have immortalised themselves in the Munich Olympia Walk of Stars after their concerts. Take a look at it. A special highlight in the Olympic Park is the Midsummer Night’s Dream. The open-air event offers international live acts and festival food. There is also a spectacular fireworks display that you shouldn’t miss. The 30-minute pyrotechnic show is breathtaking and one of the largest fireworks displays in Germany. With a view of the Olympic Lake and Olympic Mountain, the light show is accompanied by atmospheric music. In July/August you can visit the summer festival. It offers rides and numerous delicacies. If you are in the mood for sport, you can use the numerous sports facilities in the Olympic Park: Ice skating in the Olympic Ice Sports Centre, swimming in the Olympic indoor swimming pool, mini golf or tennis on public clay courts. The open-air cinema at the Olympic Lake, which takes place in summer, is highly recommended. Here you can enjoy films under a starry sky in a fantastic setting. An outstanding highlight is the Tollwood Festival in the Olympic Park. It usually takes place in July. You can experience a very special mix of performances: World stars, newcomers, legends, bands from the region. Plus arts and crafts and all kinds of delicacies.
