When you first come to Rothenburg’s market square through the narrow streets of the old town, the sight of the imposing town hall is quite surprising. The Renaissance-style building with its grand staircase and elaborately designed façade almost looks like a castle among the surrounding half-timbered houses. Where you might find a council cellar in other towns, Rothenburg’s town hall has a council drinking room perched above the market square. You can also enjoy a unique view over the town as far as the Tauber valley and the Frankenhöhe from the viewing platform of the town hall tower, which is very popular with tourists and can be climbed up 220 steps.
