Schwäbisch Hall’s magnificent town hall is one of the gems on the town’s market square. After it was severely destroyed in the devastating town fire of 1728, the elaborate restoration began in the following decade. During this, care was taken to ensure that the town hall did not dominate the market square too much, but rather blended harmoniously into the architectural backdrop of the square. During a bombing raid on April 16, 1945, Schwäbisch Hall’s town hall was again severely destroyed. The ornate ceiling paintings and stuccowork by the Upper Italian painter Livio Retti were also completely destroyed. In the following years, the town hall was then faithfully renovated based on old photos.
