Built in the course of the 13th century, Stralsund’s St. Marien Church is today considered one of the most important historical buildings in the port and Hanseatic city. After various restoration works, the imposing tower was built in the middle of the 15th century, which can still be visited today. The very distinctive Gothic spire was visible from the water at that time, but burned down in 1647 after being struck by lightning. After being replaced by a wide baroque dome in 1708, the new steeple measured only 104 meters. The interior of Stralsund’s St. Marien Church, which has been undergoing extensive restoration since 1991, contains something special: the last work of organ builder Friedrich Stellwagen.
