Stralsund’s St. Nikolai Church was first mentioned in a document in 1276, making it the city’s oldest parish church and also one of the most beautiful sacred buildings in northern Germany. The church was considered the main church due to its proximity to Stralsund’s town hall and served as a meeting place for council meetings as well as a reception room for important envoys. In addition, important laws and ordinances were officially read in Stralsund’s St. Nikolai Church. After the Gothic spires were destroyed in a fire in 1662, the south tower received a helmet in the Baroque style and the north tower only a makeshift roof due to financial constraints. Since 1980 the church has been restored.
