Medieval seaside resort with history

The heart of the picturesque old town of Travemünde is located on the Old Market Square around St Lawrence Church, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Many craftsmen and fishermen settled here around this time. The well-preserved half-timbered houses and the brick houses with gabled facades that are grouped around the square are evidence of the Middle Ages. The oldest of these former fishermen’s houses was built in the 16th century. Despite numerous storm surges and fire disasters in this part of Travemünde, the former fishing village developed into a popular seaside resort over time. Due to its location, Travemünde has always been of great strategic importance for the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
