One of the striking buildings in Bautzen that can be seen from the Friedensbrücke is the Michaeliskirche. It stands near the Old Waterworks on the rock above the Spree on which the old town of Bautzen was built. The ensemble of the two buildings – the Wasserkunst and St. Michael’s Church – is used as the city’s landmark in many drawings and inscriptions. St. Michael’s Chapel has its origins in 1473 and was built from 1495 with the tower on the south side and the nave on the west. Finally, around 1520, the vault and roof were completed.
