Germany’s largest reservoir is located in Thuringia and dams the Saale in 5 stages over a length of almost 80 km. The 65-metre-high and 205-metre-long dam was built between 1926 and 1932 and impounds more than 200 million cubic metres of water. It was named after the lead holes where lead was mined before the dam was built. The lake is surrounded by greenery and forest, and its slopes are a European bird sanctuary. It is a wonderful place for hiking and, of course, swimming in the lake and all kinds of water sports. Boats depart from Saalburg to sail the lake.
